Salagander is a two-dimensional puzzle platformer game with nostalgia-inducing 8-bit graphics. It was created by an independent developer, MrMandolino. Your job is to help a horde of salamanders pass through various challenges. The catch is that they’re not that bright so each of them will repeat what the salamander before them did. This means it will be challenging to bring them to the great pie in the sky. It’s up to you to choose the first salamander. 

What is Salagander?

As the game begins with no instructions or tutorials, you might feel disoriented but you’ll be comforted by a world where familiarity is present. The design of the game is similar to the Mario series—a platform game with similar 8-bit graphics. The controls are also similar, as well, since it's played with a keypad and O and X buttons.

Its background music is light and happy-going chip music that’ll ease your mind when you encounter challenging stages. Salagander isn’t your typical platform game. As we’ve mentioned before, your salamanders aren’t the smartest characters and controlling them isn’t easy either. This may come off as frustrating for some. You start the game with your main salamander, saving and leading other salamanders you encounter on your way. These salamander followers will literally copy everything you do.

This includes jumping or moving from left to right, even when you get separated. The goal of the game is to take every salamander to the platform with you. All of these make Salagander a challenging game. This quick 20-30 minute game is filled with stages containing vanishing platforms and switches. These can sometimes separate your main salamander with the rest of the pack but you can find other switches restart the stage.

Simple yet unique puzzler game

To unite them again, you’ll mainly use your main to trigger switches and you can also use your followers to activate those platforms for you. In a way, it’s like a team game with you and your followers as the members. Salagander is a simple but thrilling game that has a unique take on multi-charactered games. Its design—from characters to sound—is coherent and can take you back to a fun era of 8-bit games.
